History

LIVE. STUDY. LOVE.
There once was a site so immersed in history, we just had to share its tale.
Introducing tyro. Student Living by Riverlow, Sunderland.
With our boutique interiors inspired by the building’s varied uses dating back to the early 1800s, we provide a fresh & considered space to call home.

The opening of the then world-famous Wearmouth Bridge in 1796 provided opportunity for the Fawcett family to develop their land to provide smart terraced housing for the prosperous merchants & businessmen of Sunderland. By the late 19th century, Fawcett Street had developed into Sunderland’s major commercial thoroughfare. We are honoured to bring homes back to this area with 36 self-contained studios. A variety of apartments & shared cluster flats give our students a choice of settings to live, study & socialise in a clean, safe environment right in the centre of Sunderland with striking views of the very Wearmouth Bridge that made this all possible still prominent today.

With a site that just keeps on giving, our interior is set against a backdrop inspired by the site’s original 1850’s ‘Drapers’. Here once stood one of the largest department stores in the North of England with front of house showrooms finished to a most elaborate scale. Whilst it was most popular in drapery, furnishing & tailored lady’s fashion, Draper’s also produced modern decorative floor coverings by hand, ornate carpets, stylish timber & upholstered handcrafted furniture. We honour this by our careful selection of stylish furniture & the use of looser furniture pieces in our contemporary studios.

Draper’s stood until one 19XX summer’s evening, the wind was just right to catch a blaze & one of the largest fires to be seen in England since the Great Fire of London, started, right here on our historic site. The beautiful interiors were burnt out with the only elements remaining, several iconic cast iron columns; one of which can still be seen in our building today.

The fire gave way to a new lease of life in a time where cinemas were some of the most exciting places to be. In 1915 our site’s very own Havelock cinema was the best around accompanied by its very own 10-piece resident orchestra. Set against a monochrome back drop reminiscent of the Havelock Cinema’s first ever films combined with materiality inspired by Draper’s high-end department store, tyro. is the place to be. Luxury ensuite bathrooms, considered kitchen designs & walk in wardrobes to some studios, makes this our student’s must have home away from home. We look forward to welcoming you & are excited for you to play a part in our building’s new use as it continues it’s historic importance in Sunderland.
